Beds with storage
Finding a place for everything in our homes is a constant struggle and the bedroom is no exception. Striving for a calm sleeping zone with absolutely no clutter on show is the ultimate dream, but the reality is often overflowing drawers, heaving wardrobes and untidy surfaces and floors. Rather than spending money on more closets, cabinets and bedside chests, consider an all-in-one solution – the storage bed. This style of bed can help solve all your storage dilemmas instantly. It will maximise the use of space in your bedroom and provide convenient hiding spots to keep spare bedding, out-of-season clothes and accessories that you don’t need on show. There’s a great choice available for every budget and different types to suit your home.
If space is tight, an ottoman is a good option and works by using a mechanism to lift the mattress to around head height for access, revealing a spacious storage area inside. Mattresses are usually sold separately. The divan remains a popular choice for UK consumers and most come fitted with storage drawers. Drawers are usually located in one or both sides of the bed and/or at the foot end and can be disguised by fabric valances. Ottoman-style divans are also available, which provide an under-bed storage area, plus drawers. A standard bedstead/frame with the addition of storage drawers is a versatile option. If you often have family and friends to stay, you may wish to consider an extending storage bed that not only has drawers but also includes a pull-out guest bed.
You need to allow plenty of room for drawers to pull out easily or to lift up the top of the bed frame if you opt for an ottoman.

Points to consider
- SIZE & SPACE-Measure the bed frame and ensure it will fit into your bedroom comfortably, leaving enough space for accessing the storage. Ottomans may have a slightly larger frame to accommodate the lifting mechanism so bear this in mind. Storage beds, like standard beds, come in a variety of sizes, from single to super kingsize and each model will vary with the amount of storage it offers.
- STORAGE ACCESS-How easy is it to get to the storage? Can you reach items at the back of a drawer? If you like ottoman designs, check just how large the internal storage compartment is and whether it will house all your essentials. Choose a design that is fully supported when it’s open as you don’t want to have to stand holding it open. Some ottoman beds have a side-opening mechanism that can prove handy if your bed needs to be located against a wall or in an alcove.
- QUALITY/CONSTRUCTION-Your chosen model needs to not only provide lots of hiding space, but it also has to be strong enough to hold your items. Avoid beds with thin, unsupported bases and bedsteads with flimsy drawers that won’t take much weight, it’s definitely worth paying extra for a high-quality construction.
- MATERIAL- Consider how your new storage bed will fit into your existing scheme and aim to coordinate with existing furniture. Divans often come in a range of fabric options so you can select a colour or finish to match your décor.
